Sunday March 4th, 2012. I forgot to blog Friday so here is my make up blog. So I looked up Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). It is an organic compound, which is a compound of carbon and other elements. It is a Hydrocarbon, which is essential for life, which include lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acid. It is also a detergent and surfactant found in many personal care products such as soaps, shampoos, and toothpaste. It is an inexpensive and very effective foaming agent. It is used in many cosmetic products for their cleansing and emulsifying properties. There is also low levels of 1,4-Dioxane, which according to Proposition 65 classified in U.S. state of California, has been found to cause cancer. The FDA encourages manufacturers to remove it, but they are required to  by law. So, what do I think about this...well I have a mixed reaction, On one hand it seems to be safe and somewhat of a necessity, and on the other it may cause cancer. So I feel if the 1,4-Dioxane is removed, it should be perfectly fine. We have been using products that contain SLS for years and years already, so I don't really see a huge concern to make a drastic change in my life due to SLS.

  1. I have heard that comment before a few times. I agree somewhat. I have taken it out of my life 100%, but then there have been times where I borrowed someones shampoo or toothpaste when traveling... call me a hypocrite? Nah... I just think it is important to be aware of what we put in and on our bodies :)
